At Aker, we’re driven by more than just technology — we’re driven by impact. That’s why we’re proud to spotlight the inspiring mission led by our own Mark Rowlands: the One Million Bags Challenge.
The idea was born in an unexpected place — the slopes of Everest. While trekking to Base Camp, Mark was struck by the sheer volume of litter in one of the most awe-inspiring environments on Earth. Instead of walking past it, he picked it up. And as he carried that extra load down the mountain, a bigger idea began to form: What if everyone, everywhere, did the same where they live?
Fast forward to 2025 — that idea has become a nationwide movement. Through the One Million Bags Challenge, Mark is inspiring individuals and communities to get outdoors, get active, and pick up litter — one bag at a time. Using a growing Strava group to track collective progress, over 6,000 bags have already been filled by participants across the UK.
The goal? One million bags by the end of the year. But this is about more than litter. It’s about purpose. It’s about mental health. It’s about movement, community, and pride in the places we call home.
The challenge was recently featured on BBC Morning Live, helping to shine a national spotlight on the power of everyday action. What started in the Himalayas is now transforming the streets, parks, and coastlines of Britain — and we couldn’t be more proud of Mark’s leadership.
And on June 26th 2025 at the P.E.A (People. Environment. Achievement.) Awards ceremony at Ladbroke Hall in London, Mark and One Million Bags were the Technology category winners, promoting joyful, accessible climate action.
